About “Half Ripe” Xuan Paper
Xuan paper (xuanzhi simplified Chinese: 宣纸; traditional Chinese: 宣紙; pinyin: xuānzhǐ), or Shuen paper or rice paper, is a kind of paper originating in ancient China used for writing and painting. Xuan paper is renowned for being soft and fine textured, suitable for conveying the artistic expression of both Chinese calligraphy and painting.
For practitioners of Chinese calligraphy and painting, traditional rice paper is the preferred choice. Soft, flexible, and smooth, xuan paper provides a clean slate for writing and painting, and it is also surprisingly strong against the test of time.
The main difference between raw rice paper and ripe rice paper is its flexibility, wet dyeability, ink absorption, toughness, etc. Raw rice paper is softer than ripe paper, has a certain of diffusibility and strong ink absorption capacity.
The half-sized or half-cooked Xuan paper is deliberately less absorbent than raw unsized Xuan paper, while remaining more absorbent that the cooked Xuan, so it is flexible for different styles of painting. Gold Fleck Xuan Paper is suitable for all types of calligraphy and painting.
Note: These handmade papers might have slight differences in dimensions, and the color might not look exactly like the color you see on your screen. This is normal.
