This beautiful little palm-fiber crumb-brush is hand-made in traditional Japanese style, with three bunches. Its flat fan-shape is reminiscent of a falcon’s tail.

About Shuro Fiber:
This crumb-brush is made from high-quality fibers of Trachycarpus fortunei, the Chinese Windmill Palm, Windmill Palm. Hemp Palm or Chusan Palm. This is a species of hardy evergreen palm tree in the family Arecaceae, native to parts of China, Japan, Myanmar and India. Harvesting the fiber is sustainable and does not harm the trees.
In Japan this silky fiber is known as “shuro” or “demon hair”.
The Windmill Palm has been cultivated in China and Japan for thousands of years, for its coarse but very strong leaf-sheath fiber, used for making ropes and nets for ship’s fittings, sacks, and other coarse cloth where great strength is important. Shuro/demon hair is superior to many other natural fibers. Its fineness, elasticity and flexibility combine with durability and resistance to decay.
Shuro/demon hair contains natural oils that make it water-resistant. These fibers make mini cleaning-brooms that are both useful and attractive. In Japanese culture, brooms are held in far higher esteem than is usually the case in the West. The act of cleaning, the brushing away of dust and daily grime, is not perceived not as drudgery but as a spiritual act. Palm fiber brooms, especially, are more than just everyday goods. They are still used to clean prestigious shrines and temples, and sacred spaces such as places of prayer.
Hand-bound with copper wire, palm fiber crumb-brushes are durable, corrosion-resistant, and wear-resistant. Though the copper wire will not rust, copper can form a green film, or patina, on its surface over time. This patina, however, will not flake the way rust does. Instead, it creates an even, thick coating on top of the copper.
Uses:
Palm fiber crumb-brushes can be used to clean tea-sets or computer keyboards, or brush crumbs from table-cloths. The bristles are gentle on items such as teapots, teacups, tea trays, coffee pots, glasses, counter-tops etc. Ideal for cleaning desks, sofas, cars, corners, desktops etc.
