Description
Some people think that loofahs are sea-sponges, but that is not the case! The loofah plant (sometimes spelled luffa or loofa) is actually an annual vine popular for its fruits.
Luffa aegyptiaca is native to South and Southeast Asia. The flowers are yellow, and the fruits are about 30 cm (12 inches) long, resembling cucumbers.
What a useful plant this is! When the fruits are tender and young you can eat them. They become highly fibrous and inedible as they mature, but this is when they turn into natural scrubbing-sponges for use on the body or in the home.
Loofahs are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and have no artificial materials or chemicals. They have a long service life, being resistant to water immersion, and easy to dry.
