Hand-made from natural palm fiber, so they are eco-friendly and sustainable.
These little mini-brooms are made from high-quality fibers of Trachycarpus fortunei, the Chinese Windmill Palm, Windmill Palm. Hemp Palm or Chusan Palm. This is a species of hardy evergreen palm tree in the family Arecaceae, native to parts of China, Japan, Myanmar and India. Harvesting the fiber is sustainable and does not harm the trees.
In Japan this silky fiber is known as “shuro” or “demon hair”.
The Windmill Palm has been cultivated in China and Japan for thousands of years, for its coarse but very strong leaf-sheath fiber, used for making ropes and nets for ship’s fittings, sacks, and other coarse cloth where great strength is important. Shuro/demon hair is superior to many other natural fibers. Its fineness, elasticity and flexibility combine with durability and resistance to decay. Shuro brooms and brushes have been used in Japan since the Edo period.
