Description
Gourds are the natural fruits of gourd vines ( Lagenaria spp and Cucurbita spp). Sometimes called calabashes, dried gourds can be made into a wide variety of useful objects, including bowls, cups, bottles, scoops, ladles, birdhouses and musical instruments. They can also be used simply as ornaments.
In ancient Chinese tradition, gourds were used to ward off evil. You can grow your own gourds if you have a garden. They grow well in temperate to tropical climates.
If you like handicrafts, you can:
- cut them in half to make 2 scoops
- make an opening and hang them up as a birdhouse
- carve them
- paint them
- decorate them with pyrography
