What a versatile, flexible, durable, beautiful natural fiber is rattan!  (Calamus spp., the Rattan Palm) Rattan core is also called center-cane or rattan reed. It comes in several cross-section shapes, such as half-round, flat or oval. The one for sale here is “round”.  Rattan is so strong, it can be twisted into ropes, or stretched over entire rivers, as the main supports of indigenous suspension bridges.

It can be plaited, or woven into furniture, basketry etc.  For ease of use, soak it in cold water first, about 5 to 10 minutes.
